Parvathipuram Manyam district collector Dr. N. Prabhakar Reddy has inspected the Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre coming up in the Guchimi Reserve Forest. The project, estimated to cost around ₹3 crore, is being developed to address the growing menace of elephants straying into human settlements. The collector checked out the elephant-proof ditches, solar hanging fencing, special sheds, crawls, water tubs, and bathing pools for captured elephants.

A staggering 442 school going girls got married and became pregnant during the last two academic years in Parvathipuram Manyam and ASR districts. ICDS records show 312 teenage pregnancies were reported from ASR district. Of them, the Paderu revenue division alone reported 228 pregnancies, Chintoor division 47 and Rampachodavadam 37. The GK Veedhi mandal topped the chart with 37 pregnancies.

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to take precautions against intensifying heatwave conditions. APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain highlighted the risks posed by rising temperatures, hot winds, and humidity, stressing that vulnerable groups such as those with heart ailments, diabetes, and blood pressure should avoid exposure to the sun. On Sunday, Markapuram district’s Kambham recorded the State’s highest temperature at 43.3°C. Across 14 districts, 65 mandals registered maximum temperature of above 40°C. The agency forecast that on Monday (May 18), 15 districts, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, Prakasam, Nellore, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Kadapa and Tirupati are likely to experience severe heat, with maximum temperature ranging between 42°C and 44°C. Severe hot winds are expected in 28 mandals of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam districts, with another 21 mandals likely to face similar conditions. On Tuesday, the intensity is projected to rise further, with 84 mandals under severe heatwave impact and 245 mandals facing hot winds. The APSDMA advised people to avoid venturing outdoors during peak heat hours, consume plenty of fluids protect themselves from hot winds entering the ears. Meanwhile, a trough extending from Vidarbha across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu up to Mannar is expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms with lightning in districts such as Manyam, Alluri, Polavaram, Kurnool, Anantapur, and Chittoor. Farmers and cattle herders have been warned not to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms and move immediately into safe structures.

PARVATHIPURAM-MANYAM: At least 15 people fell ill after consuming contaminated jeelugu kallu (toddy brewed from fishtail palm) at Vanakabadi village under Kurupam mandal in Parvathipuram-Manyam. The victims developed diarrhoea and dehydration symptoms. With no motorable road to the village, residents shifted four ill people on doli (makeshift stretchers) for three kilometres to Deruvada junction, from where they were taken to Kurupam Community Health Centre (CHC). “Among them, 15 were suffering from vomiting and motions since morning. We shifted four victims with serious health complications to Kurupam CHC on doli as there is no road access to our village. Other 11 people are undergoing treatment,” Vanakabadi resident Puvvala Balaram said. Speaking to TNIE, Collector N Prabhakar Reddy said “We have set up a medical camp at Vanakabadi village for the jeelugu kallu victims with availability of medical officers.” The Collector said condition of the four victims – J Neelakantam, Puvvala Ramsing, J Jogarao and J Bhusanrao is stable

On Sunday, a team of Odisha officials led by a special officer of additional judicial magistrate rank visited the village and removed the temporary tents erected by the Parvathipuram-Manyam police. The officials later returned to Kotia after warning Andhra Pradesh police personnel against setting up the out-post again. Following the incident, the Parvathipuram-Manyam district administration deployed additional police personnel at Eguva Simbi village to provide security to residents and boost the confidence of the out-post staff. The situation remains tense in the disputed Kotia villages amid continuing friction between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha officials over the police out-post. Speaking to TNIE, Kotia Circle Inspector Kranthi Kumar said residents of Eguva Simbi had been facing harassment from Odisha officials for the past few days, prompting the establishment of the out-post on the directions of higher authorities. “Odisha officials asked us to remove the out-post, but we told them we have the right to establish it as per the Supreme Court verdict on the disputed Kotia villages,” he said. The CI clarified that the temporary tents were later shifted from the roadside to a nearby house to avoid inconvenience to commuters. “We will continue the police out-post in accordance with court orders despite objections from Odisha officials,” he added.
